# Hönes & Engstler: two manufacturers, two know-hows

Choosing a Black Forest cuckoo clock also means choosing between two ways of practicing the craft. Hönes and Engstler remain the two landmarks of our catalog, each with its own way of making the wood sing.

## Hönes, carving in Titisee-Neustadt

Located in Titisee-Neustadt, in the heart of the Black Forest, the Hönes manufacture remains faithful to 1-day and 8-day mechanical movements. The cases are hand-carved from linden wood: detailed vine leaves, birds with outstretched wings, animated figures with measured steps. Each piece requires several hours of work before joining its movement, individually adjusted by the watchmaker.

## Engstler, quartz in Villingen-Schwenningen

In Villingen-Schwenningen, Engstler has developed a range focused on quartz movement, often musical. Without winding or balance adjustment, these models suit those who want the cuckoo’s song without the ritual of mechanical maintenance. The figurines animate on the hour, a melody sometimes accompanies the chime, and a sensor cuts the sound at night.

## Two know-hows, one origin

Mechanical or quartz, both manufactures share the same raw material, linden wood, and the same region of origin. The choice between them mainly depends on usage: a living room where one likes to wind the weights weekly will match a Hönes movement, while a bedroom or kitchen will appreciate the simplicity of an Engstler quartz model. In both cases, the VdS certificate and 2-year warranty ensure the same German origin. The style of the case, animated chalet or traditional carving, is also offered in both ranges, leaving the choice of movement independent of the decorative choice.
