A few simple markers help distinguish an original piece from a mere decoration inspired by Bavarian style. ## The VdS Certificate The VdS certificate, issued by the Black Forest Clockmakers Association, certifies that a cuckoo clock was indeed made in the region according to the traditional methods of the craft. It is the guarantee of an original piece, not a copy produced elsewhere. ## The Wood and Carving A Black Forest cuckoo clock is carved from linden wood, cut and finished by hand, leaf by leaf and figure by figure. Cheap copies most often use molded plastic or resin elements, which are smoother and less detailed. ## Recognized Manufactories Hönes, in Titisee-Neustadt, and Engstler, in Villingen-Schwenningen, are among the recognized manufactories of the Black Forest.
