Description
The Hönes 801/3 cuckoo clock combines seven leaves carved in deep relief and three birds in a uniform walnut finish. Its mechanical movement runs for a week before needing to be wound again.
A mechanical 8-day movement
Made by Hönes in Titisee-Neustadt, this cuckoo clock runs on a weight-driven mechanical 8-day movement. The two pine cone-shaped weights are wound once a week by pulling on the chains. On the half hour, the cuckoo calls once. On the hour, it counts the hours. The pendulum swings and the ticking of the mechanism remains audible.
Its rack strike mechanism allows simple setting: the hands can be turned in both directions, with no risk to the mechanism.
Seven carved leaves and three birds
Hand-carved, this model is stained walnut. Seven leaves in deep relief surround the dial. A large bird with outspread wings stands at the top, while two others are perched on the foliage on each side.
The background carved with diamonds completes the decoration, with openwork motifs at the base. The dial displays Roman numerals and openwork hands. The painted cuckoo is the only coloured element of the whole.
The decoration of leaves and birds belongs to the tradition of the Bahnhäusle, which appeared in the Black Forest around 1850. The same decoration extends over 40 cm in a version to be wound every day.
