# Maintenance: mistakes that damage a cuckoo clock

A well-maintained Black Forest cuckoo clock passes through generations without losing precision. Some common habits, however, end up damaging the movement or distorting the call. Here are the main ones.

## Pulling on the weights instead of the chains

To wind a mechanical movement, you must gently pull on the chains, never on the pinecone-shaped weights themselves. This seemingly harmless action strains the mechanism abnormally and can misadjust it in just a few weeks.

## Forcing the hands backward

To delay the time, it is better to advance a full turn than to force the hands to move backward. Moving them backward directly blocks the internal gears and damages the striking mechanism, sometimes requiring a visit to the clockmaker.

## Cleaning with a product or a damp cloth

The carved linden wood case does not tolerate moisture or cleaning products. A soft, dry brush is enough to remove dust without damaging the sculpture details or dulling the finish.

## Ignoring the location and the night shut-off

Exposure near a radiator, fireplace, or damp window wears out the wood faster than normal use. Likewise, forgetting to activate the night shut-off lever, or to check the sensor on a quartz model, exposes to unwanted chimes at night, which is not a defect of the movement itself.

## Forgetting the transport wedges

When receiving a new cuckoo clock, a fastener sometimes still holds the pendulum or bellows to protect the mechanism during transit. A cuckoo clock that refuses to start despite proper leveling often simply hides this oversight, easy to fix with a quick look under the case.
