Cuckoo clock gift ideas for every budget
A housewarming, a wedding, a retirement: a Black Forest cuckoo clock is one of those gifts that last, and are sometimes handed down. To give a cuckoo clock that will truly please, four criteria are enough: the movement, the style, the size and the budget.
Quartz or mechanical: depending on the person
For someone discovering cuckoo clocks or looking for an easy-going object, quartz is the most relaxed choice. It runs on batteries, needs no winding, and a light sensor often silences the call at night. This chalet with green shutters, for example, plays one of its twelve melodies after each hour and pauses as soon as the room goes dark.
For a lover of tradition, a mechanical clock has more charm: you wind the weights and hear the tick-tock of the pendulum and the breath of the bellows. If the person might forget to wind it every day, choose an 8-day movement, wound once a week. Our guide explains the differences between 1-day and 8-day movements.
Certified mechanical cuckoo clocks, such as those by Hönes, come with a bilingual certificate of authenticity confirming they were made in the Black Forest. This VdS certificate is reserved for mechanical movements. To compare the two movements in detail, see our guide mechanical or quartz.
Chalet or carved: depending on the home
Style matters as much as the movement. A colorful, animated chalet brings warmth to a sober interior, while a walnut-stained carved cuckoo clock suits antique furniture and classic décor. Our tips on choosing between chalet or carved will help you decide.
Also think about the space available in the recipient’s home. A cuckoo clock hangs about 1.80 to 2 m (6 to 6.5 ft) from the floor, and its weights need room to drop. Our guide helps you find the right size.
Our gift ideas by budget
Under €300. This range includes small quartz clocks, chalet or carved, and the first 20 cm (8 in) mechanical 1-day cuckoo clocks. This model with five large carved leaves, topped by a bird with spread wings, is a lovely introduction to certified mechanical clocks.
€300 to €600. Here you will find carved 8-day mechanical clocks, the first animated chalets and many musical quartz models. On this chalet with a goat, a woodchopper comes to life and brings his axe down on the chopping block. For weekly winding, this 8-day dial with three birds is a classic.
Over €600. This is the realm of musical chalets with several animations, large hunting models and big quartz scenes. On this chalet where two goats face off, dancers come to life and a mill wheel turns to the sound of two melodies.
Whatever the budget, our cuckoo clocks come with a 2-year warranty.
Order with peace of mind
Each order is prepared within 24 to 48 working hours, then shipped by UPS: allow 2 to 6 working days depending on the country. Delivery times can be longer before the holidays, so for Christmas it is best to order early. Outside the EU, import duties and taxes may apply and are paid by the recipient. Check the delivery times for each country.
If you change your mind, you have 14 days after receipt to let us know, then 14 days to send the clock back. It must be complete, with its weights, pendulum and instructions, and return shipping is at your expense. So keep the original packaging until the gift has found its place.
