Description
The Hönes 1748 cuckoo clock is one of the most endearing chalets of the Black Forest: a wealth of handmade details in just 23 cm, brought to life by a genuine mechanical movement.
A 1-day movement
The 1-day mechanical movement is driven by two pine cone weights, wound every day by pulling the chains. If this is your first mechanical cuckoo clock, our guide to the mechanical movement explains exactly how it works. At the half hour, the cuckoo calls once. On the full hour, it counts out the hours, accompanied by a gong. A lever silences the call for the night.
Made by Hönes in Titisee-Neustadt, this clock bears the VdS seal and comes with its certificate of authenticity.
A chalet full of details
Beneath a shingle roof with cut-out trim, the brown wooden chalet features cream shutters decorated with red hearts and flower boxes. A wooden bench stands in front of a low wall of pale stones.
On the left, the clock peddler comes to life, his frame of clocks on his back and his yellow umbrella in hand. On the right, at the foot of a fir tree, a Saint Bernard with a small barrel around its neck watches over its puppy. In the middle, the black dial with cream Roman numerals bears the Hönes logo in place of the XII.
The peddler recalls the merchants who set off on foot to sell Black Forest clocks across Europe.
