Description
The Hönes 1723/4 cuckoo clock is among the liveliest carved scenes from the world leader in Black Forest cuckoo clocks, with 39 cm of hand-worked wood and a mechanical movement that calls on every half hour.
The mechanical heart of the cuckoo clock
Two pine cone-shaped weights drive the mechanical 1-day movement. The chains are wound each day to keep the clock running. On the half hour, the cuckoo calls once, then the number of hours is announced on the hour. A lever allows the call to be switched off manually during the night.
For a model of this height, see our advice on hanging it properly on the wall.
A brood carved in wood
The decoration reveals itself gradually. At the top, a large carved bird perches on a branch, its wings and tail spread. Maple leaves surround the upper part, while a bird perches on a branch on each side of the dial.
Beneath it, a nest holds the chicks. The carved lattice surrounds the cuckoo door and the black dial with cream Roman numerals. The Hönes logo appears in place of the XII. The carvings and the case are made by hand.
The same trio of birds adorns another Hönes cuckoo clock, this time surrounded by seven carved leaves.
