Black Forest chalet cuckoo clocks

Shingle roof, openwork balcony, shutters and flower boxes: the chalet cuckoo clock is a mountain house in miniature. Every hour, its facade comes to life, often to music. Here you will find our Hönes chalets, which are mechanical, and our Engstler chalets, which run on quartz.

A mountain house that comes to life

The chalet style was born in Switzerland in the late 19th century, before being adopted by Black Forest clockmakers in the early 20th century. Its cases reproduce farmhouses from the Black Forest, the Swiss Alps, Bavaria or Tyrol.

Its facade lends itself to animated scenes: dancers turning on the balcony, a woodchopper raising his axe, a beer drinker, a water wheel or goats facing off. On this chalet, a peddler with an umbrella walks past the house while a chimney sweep pops out of the chimney. To compare with carved models, read our tips on choosing between chalet or carved.

Mechanical or quartz

Our Hönes chalets are mechanical, most often with a 1-day movement: the weights are wound every day, and the call comes from real bellows. Musical models then play Edelweiss or The Happy Wanderer, like this chalet with red shutters, where a shingle maker works under the gaze of two dancing couples.

Our Engstler chalets run on quartz: no winding, a recorded call often followed by an echo, twelve melodies and a light sensor that silences the sound at night. On this chalet with a half-timbered facade, a woodchopper, a water wheel and dancers come to life with each melody.

To decide, our guide helps you choose between a mechanical or quartz cuckoo clock. You can also narrow your search to our battery-operated chalet cuckoo clocks or our mechanical chalet cuckoo clocks, or discover our traditional carved cuckoo clocks.

What size to choose?

Our selection ranges from small chalets of about 20 cm (8 in), perfect for a hallway, to large 50 cm (20 in) scenes made for a living room or stairwell. Also think about the space below the dial for the weights to drop: our guide helps you find the right size.

A chalet cuckoo is also chosen for the scene that comes to life every hour: some models feature a dancing couple, others activate a mill wheel or make a clockmaker appear at his window, all accompanied by a mechanical or electronic melody depending on the movement. The sizes range from a compact model for an entryway to a large piece intended for a living room or staircase. The brand Engstler, based in Villingen-Schwenningen, has made this its specialty with its musical quartz movements, while Hönes also offers this style in mechanical versions. To compare the two movements, go to the Quartz and Mechanical categories, or for a more traditional decor, the Traditional category.
